Why the two numbers can disagree
- Accuracy. A raw KPH counts every keypress; a net or adjusted score subtracts errors. A test reporting 5% mistakes will show a lower net KPH than the raw one, so check which figure a job spec means.
- Numbers and symbols. The 5-keystroke word assumes ordinary prose. Numeric data entry uses shorter "words," so KPH is the fairer measure there and WPM can look inflated.
- Measurement window. A rate from a 10-second burst overstates a sustainable hourly pace. A minute or more gives a figure that scales honestly to KPH.
