How it's calculated
Win% = (W + ½T) ÷ (W + L + T) × 100
W = wins, L = losses, T = ties (count as half a win). Hockey points% variant: (2W + OTL) ÷ (2 × games), where OTL = overtime/shootout losses.
Worked examples
| Record (W-L-T) | Win % | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 10-6-0 | .625 | Standard, no ties |
| 8-6-2 | .563 | Ties count as half a win |
| 50-25 | .667 | Simple wins over games |
Common questions
How is winning percentage calculated?
Divide wins by total games. With ties, each tie counts as half a win before dividing.
Why does the NHL use a different method?
The NHL awards 2 points for a win and 1 for an overtime loss, so its standings are based on points percentage rather than straight wins.
