Swimming Time Calculator (Laps, Pace & Speed)

From a distance and a pace per 100, this works out total swim time, lap count, and speed. You can toggle between short-course yards, short-course meters, and long-course meters.

How to use
  1. Enter the total distance you plan to swim.
  2. Enter your pace per 100 m or 100 yd.
  3. Pick the pool course (SCY, SCM, or LCM) and read time, laps, and speed.

Pace, time and distance all come from one relationship

pace = timedistance × 100

Pace is time per 100 meters (or yards). Rearranged, the same equation gives the other two: time = distance ÷ 100 × pace, and distance = time ÷ pace × 100. Count laps as lengths × pool length — forty lengths of a 25 m pool is 1,000 m. Longer swims usually run 5–10% slower on the closing lengths as fatigue sets in, so a doubled distance takes slightly more than double the time.

Typical 100 m freestyle pace by level

LevelPace per 100 m
Beginner2:30–3:30
Recreational2:00–2:30
Amateur / club1:30–2:00
Advanced (college)0:50–1:05
Elite / Olympic< 0:50

Stroke matters too: at a given effort, breaststroke and backstroke are roughly 20–30 seconds per 100 slower than freestyle, and butterfly slower still.

Two things that trip people up

  • Pace is not finish time. Pace is always per 100; finish time is the whole swim. State which one you mean.
  • Yards are not meters. A 25 yd pool is about 22.9 m, so a US yard-pool time is not directly comparable to a metric one. One yard is 0.9144 m.

Common questions

How do I work out my swim pace?

Pace is the time to cover 100 meters or 100 yards. Divide your total time in seconds by the distance, then multiply by 100. Swim 200 m in 3 minutes and your pace is 90 seconds per 100 m, written 1:30/100m.

Does pace change between a 25 m and a 50 m pool?

Your pace per 100 stays the same measure of speed in either pool. The swim can feel different because a short-course pool has more turns, which very fast swimmers use to push off the wall and gain time.

How long does it take to swim a mile?

A mile is about 1,609 m. A recreational swimmer takes roughly 25 to 35 minutes, an advanced one 15 to 20, and a beginner can need 45 to 60. Multiply your 100 m pace by about 16 for a quick estimate.
