The rule of three
Hematocrit and hemoglobin measure different things — one is the fraction of blood volume that is red cells, the other is the oxygen-carrying protein inside them — but in healthy blood they move together. As a rule of thumb, hematocrit is about three times the hemoglobin. So Hgb 15 → Hct ≈ 45, and to estimate hemoglobin, divide the hematocrit by three.

Reference ranges vary slightly between labs. Below range suggests anemia; above range suggests polycythemia or, commonly, dehydration.
Where the rule holds and where it breaks
- What it assumes. The 3:1 ratio works when red cells are normal size and normally filled with hemoglobin.
- Dehydration. Low plasma volume concentrates the blood, raising both values together, so the ratio can still look normal while numbers are falsely high.
- Abnormal cells. In iron-deficiency or macrocytic anemia the cells are under- or over-filled, and the ratio drifts away from three.
- A quality check, not a diagnosis. Clinicians use the ratio to catch a mis-measurement; interpretation still needs the full blood count and a doctor.

What is the rule of three for hemoglobin and hematocrit?
Hematocrit is roughly three times the hemoglobin: Hct (%) is about 3 x Hgb (g/dL). A hemoglobin of 15 g/dL suggests a hematocrit near 45 percent. It is a quick sanity check, not an exact conversion.

No. Men typically run 13.5 to 17.5 g/dL hemoglobin and 41 to 53 percent hematocrit; women run 12.0 to 15.5 g/dL and 36 to 46 percent. Pregnancy and altitude shift these further.
