FFMI is your muscle mass scaled to height
FFMI takes the weight that is not fat and divides it by your height squared — the same shape as BMI, but using lean mass only. That is why it separates a muscular build from a heavy one, which BMI cannot.
Fat-free mass is your weight minus your fat: weight × (1 − body-fat%). An 80 kg man at 15% body fat carries 68 kg of lean mass; at 1.80 m that is 68 ÷ 3.24 = an FFMI of 21.0.

Body fat matters. The same lean mass gives the same FFMI whether you are lean or not, but a bad body-fat reading throws off the lean-mass figure it is built on.
Why the calculator also shows a normalized value
Raw FFMI slightly favors shorter people. The normalized version adjusts everyone to a 1.80 m reference height so two people of different heights can be compared fairly. That adjusted number is the one used against the ~25 natural ceiling.
- The weak link is body fat — home scales and handheld monitors can be off by 5–10%. DEXA is the accurate reference.
- Water shifts it — a heavy carb or salt load inflates lean mass for a day or two.
- It ignores age — muscle falls roughly 3–5% per decade after 30, so read an older adult's FFMI in that light.
Common questions
What is a normal FFMI?
For men a healthy range is about 18 to 22, and 16 to 18 for women. Trained lifters often reach 22 to 25. Numbers above that mean an unusually high amount of muscle for your height.
Is FFMI better than BMI?
For muscular people, yes. BMI counts all body mass the same, so it flags a lean athlete as overweight. FFMI strips out fat first, so it reflects actual muscle rather than total weight.
What is the natural FFMI limit?
Research on drug-free athletes puts the ceiling near 25 for men, occasionally 26 to 27 with excellent genetics and low body fat. A normalized FFMI above about 26 is often treated as a red flag for anabolic steroid use.
