The break-even is where the device's carbon equals the books it replaces

Making one e-reader emits roughly 170 kg of CO₂-equivalent, almost all of it up front. A single print book runs about 7.5 kg over its whole life. Divide one by the other and the device offsets itself somewhere around 25 to 30 books. Reading on it afterwards costs almost nothing, about 0.015 kg per title.

The number that really decides it is how long you keep the device

  • Longevity beats everything. Spread over five to ten years, an e-reader easily passes break-even. Replace it every year and you reset the 170 kg debt each time and never catch up.
  • Reading volume sets the pace. Someone reading 30-plus books a year offsets the device inside a year. A ten-books-a-year reader takes three years or more.
  • Borrowing wins outright. A library book or a secondhand copy carries almost no fresh carbon, which beats both a new print book and a new device.

Common questions

How many books do I need to read to break even on an e-reader?

Roughly 25 to 30 print books. Making an e-reader emits about 170 kg of CO2, and each print book is around 7.5 kg, so once you have read past that number the device is the lower-carbon choice. Counting broader environmental impact, some studies push the figure to 40 to 70 books.

Does reading an e-book add any carbon?

Very little. After the device is made, each e-book you read adds about 0.015 kg of CO2 from charging and downloading, which is why almost all of an e-reader footprint is locked in at manufacture.

When is a print book actually the greener option?

If you read only a handful of books a year and would replace the e-reader every year or two, the device never pays back its manufacturing carbon. Light readers, or anyone who upgrades gadgets often, come out ahead with print, ideally borrowed or secondhand.
