The estimate is leaf area divided by the size of one leaf
Crown area is π × (crown width ÷ 2)² in square meters. Multiplying by the leaf area index (LAI) — how many layers of leaf sit over each patch of ground, typically 4 to 5.5 for a broadleaf tree — gives the total leaf area, which you divide by the area of a single leaf. This is an order-of-magnitude answer, not a headcount.

Conifers are counted as individual needles, so their totals run an order of magnitude higher than a broadleaf tree of the same size. "Small" and "large" here roughly mean 30 cm versus 60 cm trunk diameter (DBH).
What moves the number
- Species. It sets both leaf size and how dense the canopy is (LAI). Small-leaf, high-LAI species like birch pack in the most leaves.
- Crown width. Leaf count scales with the square of the crown diameter, so a tree twice as wide has roughly four times the leaves.
- Season and health. The count peaks in mid-summer; a stressed or damaged tree carries fewer. Two trees of one species vary by 20 to 30 percent, so treat the result as a range.

A medium mature broadleaf tree carries roughly 100,000 to 200,000 leaves. A small maple around 30 cm trunk diameter holds about 50,000; a large oak can reach 400,000 to 700,000. Any single figure is an estimate good to about plus or minus 20 to 30 percent.
How do I estimate leaf count without counting?
Measure the crown width in meters, square half of it and multiply by 3.14 to get the ground area the crown covers. Multiply that by the leaf area index (about 4.5 for a broadleaf tree) to get total leaf area, then divide by the average area of one leaf for that species.
Why do birches have more leaves than oaks of the same size?
