Roughly 25 human years per hamster year

A hamster packs a full life into about 2.5 years, so its clock runs far faster than ours. As a rule of thumb, one hamster year is about 25 human years. This is an approximation for context, not veterinary advice.

human years hamster years × 25

Aging is not linear, though. Hamsters mature very fast when young and slow down later, so for a young pet the closer guide is about 14 days of life per human year in the first couple of months.

Hamster age in human years

Hamster ageHuman yearsLife stage
3 weeks~15Weaned pup
2 months~20Juvenile, fully grown
6 months~30Young adult

1.5 years~45Entering senior
2 years~55–60Senior
2.5 years~70Old age
3 years~80+Rare, very old

Individual hamsters vary a lot. Diet, cage size, temperature, stress and genetics all shift the real figure, so treat these as ballpark only.

Lifespan differs by breed

  • Roborovski. The longest-lived, about 3 to 3.5 years, so its year maps to a slightly gentler scale.
  • Syrian. The common large pet hamster, roughly 2 to 3 years.
  • Chinese and Campbell's dwarf. Around 2 to 2.5 years.
  • Winter White dwarf. The shortest average life, about 1 to 2 years, so it reaches "senior" the fastest.

Because lifespans differ, the same hamster year is worth more human years in a short-lived breed than in a Roborovski.

Common questions

How do you convert hamster age to human years?

A hamster lives about 2.5 years against a human 75 or so, so one hamster year is roughly 25 human years. A quick check for the young is that about 14 days of hamster life equals one human year. These are rough figures, not veterinary advice.

How old is a 1-year-old hamster in human years?

Around 25 human years. At that point a hamster is a fully mature adult, past its fastest-growing stage but not yet a senior.

When is a hamster considered old?

A hamster is usually treated as a senior from about 1.5 years, which is roughly 45 human years. Signs include less activity, more sleeping, a greying coat and reduced appetite.
