Why 100 yards is not 100 metres
- A yard is 8.6% shorter than a metre. Treating them as equal builds up error fast — 100 yards is 91.44 m, not 100 m, so a metric field is nearly nine metres longer.
- Buying fabric. Cloth is sold by the yard in the US and by the metre in Europe. Order 5 yards and you get 4.57 m, not 5 m — enough of a gap to leave you short on the last piece.
- Don't confuse yards with feet. One yard is 3 feet; mixing them up is a threefold error.
