Unit Converters

Grams to Liters (by Substance Density) Converter

Convert a mass in grams to a volume in liters using each substance's density. Water is the simple case at 1 liter per 1000 grams; honey and oils differ.

How it's calculated

litres = grams ÷ k (k = grams per litre of the substance)

grams = mass, k = mass of one litre of the substance in grams (density × 1000), litres = result. Density in g/mL = k ÷ 1000. Reverse: grams = litres × k.

Common questions

Why does the answer depend on the substance?

Grams measure mass and liters measure volume. The bridge between them is density, which is different for water, honey, and oils.

Is 1 liter of water exactly 1000 grams?

Close enough for everyday use. It is exact at 4 °C and drifts slightly with temperature.
