One meter has 10 decimeters, so this converter just shifts the decimal by one place. Type a value either side and you get the answer in both directions.

Divide by ten — that is the whole conversion

meters = decimeters ÷ 10,   decimeters = meters × 10

A decimeter is one tenth of a meter, so converting is just moving the decimal point one place to the left. 25 dm → 2.5 m. Going the other way, a meter holds ten decimeters, so you multiply. The decimeter is a valid SI unit but is rarely used in practice — most people reach for meters or centimeters instead.

The one mistake to avoid

  • Get the direction right. A decimeter is smaller than a meter, so decimeters to meters is division and meters to decimeters is multiplication. Flip them and your answer is off by a factor of 100.
  • Do not confuse dm with dg. A decimeter (dm) measures length; a decigram (dg) measures mass. The prefix is the same but the base unit is not.

Common questions

How many meters is one decimeter?

One decimeter is 0.1 meters, or one tenth of a meter. Ten decimeters make a full meter.

How do I convert decimeters to meters in my head?

Move the decimal point one place to the left, which is the same as dividing by 10. So 35 dm becomes 3.5 m, and 8 dm becomes 0.8 m.

How many centimeters and millimeters is a decimeter?

One decimeter equals 10 centimeters or 100 millimeters. It sits between the centimeter and the meter in the metric ladder.
