Exact age is counted on the calendar, not divided
Your exact age is the gap between two dates expressed as whole years, then whole months, then leftover days. The right way is to count up the calendar, not to divide total days by 365, because month lengths and leap years make that estimate drift.
- Years. Subtract the birth year from the current year, then take one off if this year's birthday has not arrived yet.
- Months. Count whole calendar months since the last birthday.
- Days. Whatever is left over after the last completed month, using that month's real length.

Day counts include the 7 or 8 leap days that fall in each stretch, which is exactly why a plain divide-by-365 comes up short.
Leap years and the 29 February case
The Gregorian rule adds a leap day in years divisible by 4, but skips century years unless they divide by 400. That keeps the calendar year at an average 365.2425 days.

Someone born on 29 February has no birthday in common years. Most conventions roll it to 1 March; a few use 28 February, which can shift the exact day the next age is reached.
What trips the count up
- Dividing by 365. Ignores leap days and slowly overstates or understates the total.
- Treating months as equal. "One month ago" can be 28, 29, 30 or 31 days depending on the month.
- The off-by-one year. Being 30 years old means you are in your 31st year of life; the two ways of counting differ by one.
- Time zones. A birth late at night in one zone can fall on a different calendar day elsewhere, nudging the day count.

Why not just divide the total days by 365?

How do people born on 29 February age in normal years?
They age like anyone else, gaining a year every 365 or 366 days. In common years there is no 29 February, so most mark the milestone on 1 March, though some conventions and jurisdictions use 28 February.
Does a month always mean the same number of days?
No. Calendar months run 28 to 31 days, so "one month" is not a fixed length. Exact age counts whole calendar months first and only converts the remainder into days, which avoids that ambiguity.
