What the count is measuring

The number is the whole calendar days between today and your December target, weekends and holidays included. December 1st is the season's start and the usual Advent kickoff; December 25th is Christmas; December 31st closes the year.

days left = target date today

Turn the days into weeks

Divide by 7 for full weeks; the remainder is the leftover days. It is the fastest way to gauge how much runway you have for shopping and shipping.

  • Full weeks. Days left divided by 7, rounded down. 40 days left is 5 weeks and 5 days.
  • Shipping cutoffs. Ground delivery usually needs to go by mid December; overnight buys you until the 23rd or 24th. Count in days, not "a couple of weeks."
  • Leap years. A leap year adds February 29, so a count made before March lands one day longer than a normal year.

Common questions

Does the countdown target December 1st or Christmas?

Both are common. December 1st marks the start of the holiday season and the traditional Advent window; December 25th is Christmas. Pick the target that matches what you are planning for.

How many days does an Advent calendar cover?

Exactly 24 days, running from December 1st to December 24th, the day before Christmas. A few versions add December 25th to make 25 doors.

If it is already December, what does the count show?

It shows the days left in the current month, so on a day in December it counts down to the 25th or 31st. To look ahead, target next year instead.
