Calendar days minus weekends minus holidays

A business day is a normal working day, Monday to Friday. The count starts from the full span and removes the days when offices, banks and markets are closed.

Business days = total days weekends holidays

Only holidays that fall on a weekday get subtracted, since a holiday landing on a weekend was already removed. Which holidays apply depends on the country, so the same date range gives different answers in different places.

Holidays vary by country

CountryWorking weekPublic holidays
United StatesMon–Fri~11 federal
United KingdomMon–Fri8 bank holidays
GermanyMon–Fri9 national, up to 5 more by state
FranceMon–Fri11 national

Some regions differ entirely: parts of the Middle East and Israel run a Sunday-to-Thursday week, so their weekends fall on Friday and Saturday.

Why this matters and where it trips up

  • Deadlines and delivery. A promise of "within 5 business days" skips weekends, so it can stretch a full week or more across the calendar.
  • Settlement. Bank transfers and stock trades settle in business days (T+2 is standard), which is why timing around a weekend or holiday matters.
  • Exchanges keep their own calendar. A market can close on days that are not public holidays, so a settlement date can slip past what a plain weekday count predicts.

Common questions

How are business days counted between two dates?

Start from the total calendar days, subtract every Saturday and Sunday, then subtract any public holidays that fall on a weekday. What is left is the number of working days.

How many business days are in a year?

About 250 to 252 in the US. A year has 365 days, roughly 104 fall on weekends, and around 11 are federal holidays, leaving about 250. The exact figure shifts with which weekday the year starts on.

What happens when a holiday lands on a weekend?

In the US it is observed on the nearest weekday: a Saturday holiday moves to the Friday before and a Sunday holiday to the Monday after. Whether your count reflects that depends on the country rules you pick.
