Christmas is a fixed date, so the count is exact

days left = Dec 25 today

December 25 does not move, so the count is a plain subtraction of dates. A day rolls off at midnight in your own time zone. Once the 25th has passed, the target jumps to next year's Christmas and the number climbs back toward roughly 365.

The same count in weeks and months

Divide the days by 7 for whole weeks, or by about 30.4 for a rough month figure.

Days leftWeeksRoughly
7 days1 weekone week
30 days4 weeks + 2 daysabout a month
90 days12 weeks + 6 daysabout 3 months
180 days25 weeks + 5 daysabout 6 months
365 days52 weeks + 1 daya full year

Deadlines that hang off the count

  • Advent. Most Advent calendars run December 1 to 24, one door a day, so they start when the count reaches 24.
  • Shipping cut-offs. To arrive by the 25th, US ground and USPS usually want orders by about December 17, and Amazon Prime by roughly December 21. Confirm with the retailer.
  • Orthodox Christmas. Set the target to January 7 for the Julian-calendar date, 13 days later than December 25.
  • Christmas Eve. The 24th is one day before the count hits zero, not the day itself.

Common questions

When does the countdown reset to a new year?

The moment December 25 passes, the target rolls forward to the 25th of the following year, so the number never sits at zero for long. Before that, it always counts to Christmas of the current year.

Is Orthodox Christmas the same day?

No. Churches that follow the Julian calendar (Russia, Serbia, Georgia) keep Christmas on January 7, which is 13 days after December 25. Greece, Romania and Bulgaria use December 25 like the West.

How many weeks is the countdown at its longest?

Just after one Christmas, the next is about 52 weeks away. Divide the day count by 7 for full weeks: 90 days is 12 weeks and 6 days, 180 days is roughly 25 and a half weeks.
