How it's calculated

boxes = ⌈area × (1 + waste) ÷ box coverage⌉

area = length × width, waste = overage fraction (e.g. 0.10 for 10%), box coverage = ft² covered per box, ⌈ ⌉ rounds up to whole boxes.

Common questions

How much waste should I add?

Around 5 to 10 percent is common for straight rooms, and more for diagonal layouts or rooms with many cuts.

Why does it round up to whole boxes?

Flooring is sold by the box, so the calculator rounds up to make sure you have enough to finish the job.
